As California burns, suspects get longer jail waits

Suspected criminals may have to spend a few extra days in jail because fires in the San Diego area have overwhelmed local courts, the state's chief justice said in an order released last Tuesday.
California Supreme Court Justice Ronald George issued an emergency order extending the period in which courts have to conduct felony arraignments, preliminary examinations and trials by up to 30 days, meaning that some suspects could face more time behind bars. For example, the normal time limit for felony arraignments was extended from 48 hours to seven days.
The unusual order applied to proceedings between Oct. 27 and Oct. 31. A court official said some legal proceedings were last delayed in wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon
