The U.S. Department of Education has agreed to fund inmate programs at the Lackawanna County Prison in Penn., with classes focusing on topics such as academic skills and stress and anger management, officials said. The federal department said it plans to first grant more than $300,000 to fund an assortment of programs and will provide an additional $600,000 over the next two years if the programs are deemed successful. A local nonprofit organization, the Employment Opportunity and Training Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania, will administer the programs and lead the 10- to 12-week courses. Other topics expected to be covered in the classes include job and financial skills, communication skills and impersonal and family relationships. Department spokesman Jim Bradshaw said the prison competed for the grants with 110 correctional facilities nationwide. The programs are expected to be in place by the end of the year, said Tim Betti, the jail's clinical director. The prison will be responsible for monitoring the success of the initiative by tracking the inmates' progress, the rate of recidivism and the programs' performance. Between 500 and 600 inmates currently participate in programs run by the EOTC, with about half completing the courses, said Martha Morse, who manages prison programs for the center. |
