Two D.C. Jail inmates have been convicted of conspiring to have themselves shot as part of a plot to sue the District government for negligence. Shawn Gray and Leonard Johnson each face at least 11 years in prison when they are sentenced in January. Two other inmates already had pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court to participating in the scheme. The shootings in December 2003 were initially believed to be another act of jailhouse violence, but investigators soon concluded that they were actually an attempt to profit from the jail's history of security problems. Prosecutors say that the men smuggled a gun into the jail to pull off the scheme. |
