| Four More Die Violently in Jails |

Venezuelan Prisons Observatory chief Humberto Prado said last week that two of the latest prison deaths were the result of knife wounds, while one inmate died of a shooting and one inmate was found dead on his mattress in his cell, a victim of strangulation. At the penitentiary in Uribana in Barquisimeto, 420 family members were held by inmates inside the jail after visiting hours last week. The visitors and their captors are demanding the return of 16 inmates transferred to other prisons. The warden of Uribana said the decision to return the inmates does not rest with him, but with the Interior and Justice Ministry (MIJ). “They must decide if these inmates can return to Uribana depending on their behavior at the other penitentiaries,” warden Guillermo Machado Blanco told El Impulso newspaper. Machado Blanco added that on Wednesday of last week, he received a fax from the Interior and Justice Ministry “explaining that they would return the inmates who are now in El Dorado (Bolívar state) and Tocorón (Aragua state) based on studies being conducted by teams of psychologists, sociologists and criminologist in these prisons, observing the behavior of the inmates during their stay in those jails.” He said inside the prison is calm except at the medium and minimum security wings where the hostages are being held. In those areas drinking water and food are running low. On Friday, the inmates demanded a meeting with Interior and Justice Minister Jesse Chacón, public defender Domingo Montes de Oca and Lara state legislative council Deputy Héctor Alzual Planchart to explain their demands. |
