About 564 inmates went on a rampage yesterday in Nigeria's Abeokuta Prison, in an attempt to break out of the facility. Reportedly, five of the prison's officials were badly injured. According to reports, unrest started at about noon on Sunday, when the inmates protested their continued remand and asked that the State Chief Judge come to the prison and grant them amnesty. Officials say the inmates immediately began to attack officers, using sticks and iron rods. Some prisoners were shot in the brawl in an attempt to demobilize them and contain their riot. None of the prisoners, according to Governor Daniel and the Controller of Prisons in the State Mr. Amos Adetayo, escaped from the prison. Of the 564 inmates in the 510 capacity prison, 90 were said to have been condemned to death and were awaiting the death penalty, while 80 have been convicted and sentenced to various jail terms. |
