A trip from Columbus back to LaFayette, Alabama, turned deadly for a Chambers County corrections officer. While traveling through Cusseta last week, he was involved in an accident.
"When the deputies arrived, they observed a subject in a vehicle. At that time, they knew it was a homicide. They called out our investigators who, in turn, called out the A.B.I.," said Sid Lockhart, Chambers County Sheriff.
Jameel Golden, 27, was an officer at the county jail for approximately three years. According to Alabama State Troopers, he had been shot. Chambers County investigators are still piecing together the events, trying to figure out if he was killed before or after he wrecked. He was off-duty at the time, but he was wearing his uniform.
Lockhart said he was a great young man with a lot of potential, and he will certainly be missed.
"It's a sad day here at the sheriff's office. He was a good employee. He was liked by all of our other employees here, and we just wish everyone would keep his family in their prayers," said Lockhart.
Golden's brother is also in law enforcement. He is a deputy in Macon County, AL. He told News Leader 9 that Golden will be buried back home in Lithia Springs, Georgia, in his uniform.
