Arizona inmates at the state prison in Kingman have built habitats for burrowing owls. The inmates built 40 artificial habitats out of plastic pipe and buckets on Mohave Community College land. "The college has land that used to be ranch land," said Leah Goldie, an employee of the Kingman prison who watched the inmates work on Nov. 3. "They had to sign a contract saying they won't disturb the land for at least 10 years." The burrowing owl habitats are for birds relocated by a nonprofit that rehabilitates birds displaced by Phoenix development. The owls use gopher and prairie dog holes as winter homes, but the homes have been destroyed by development and agriculture. The constructed habitats are designed to replace the natural holes. |
