CO Investigated in Escapes

At least one Iowa State Penitentiary “employee” is under suspension for the escape of two maximum security inmates. Several more could face “punishments,” according to Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack.

Officials would not release the names of the officers being investigated. However, since two inmates escaped on Monday, Nov. 14, several security problems within the prison have been cited as a reason for the escape.

According to prison officials, the two inmates were able to escape while the rest of their group went to dinner. They were not reported missing until around 8 p.m. during a head count. The inmates were also able to make, store and use a homemade grappling hook that helped them scale prison walls. Budget cuts are also cited as part of the reason the inmates were able to escape because there were not enough officers to cover the watch towers.
