A California county supervisor called for the suspension or demotion of sheriff's deputies who left a group of jail inmates unattended while one inmate was fatally beaten. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors also approved a motion requesting the Sheriff's Department present a report by Dec. 6 on corrective action related to last week's inmate killing. The report must include statistics on staffing levels, recruitment efforts, implementation of past recommendations and a timeline for new policies. The victim, 35, was fatally beaten while in an unsupervised room with about 30 other inmates, authorities said. The incident was being investigated. Fresh criticism of the department comes as some question the Sheriff's Department's ability to control the jail population. Eight inmates have been killed in custody in the past two years. Another 20 have escaped from deputies' custody this year, while 23 were released by mistake, according to department records. |
