Two North Carolina jailers have been fired in recent weeks for stealing from inmates. Gerry Vance Childress of Shallotte was fired last week from Brunswick County after he was caught on videotape using a home improvement store gift card that had been stolen from an inmate. He's charged with financial card theft, which is a felony, and financial card fraud and willfully failing to discharge duties, both misdemeanors. Childress had been at the jail since 2002. New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey says Patrice Black of Wilmington was fired in September, after being charged with misdemeanor larceny. She's accused of stealing cash from an inmate. |
