Fifty computers rebuilt by Massachusetts prison inmates are being donated to the Sisson School in Lynn last week. Principal John Morris said Sisson teachers will plug the computers into new wiring installed in the school and open a computer laboratory and outfit classrooms with computers.
"We are excited to be part of this program and very appreciative of the work done by the Department of Corrections to put this donation together," Morris said.
Inmates in the state medium security prison in Shirley rebuilt computers donated to the state Department of Correction by companies and state trial courts.
"By refurbishing outdated computers, we are able to give schools additional technological resources and provide better access to computers for students who may not have them at home," Corrections Commissioner Kathleen Dennehy said.
Donation guidelines require the computers to be used by students, not teachers or other school employees. Each computer has been refurbished with a CD-ROM drive, sound card and a new monitor, keyboard and mouse,
Since 1997, the Department of Corrections has donated about 2,500 computers to classrooms across Massachusetts. Schools like Sisson are selected for donations by comparing the number of computers in the school with the number of students.
Thirty-five inmates refurbish the computers and state officials estimate the program has saved schools across the street $500,000 to $625,000.
"Inmates who work on these computers are obtaining marketable skills that they can use when they return to the community," Dennehy said.
