Escape charges have been filed against six of the nine inmates who broke out of the Yakima County jail last week. Two of the escapees remain at large. Five of the captured escapees were arraigned Wednesday in Yakima County Superior Court on charges of second-degree escape. A sixth escapee was charged with first-degree escape. Under Washington law, first-degree escape applies only to inmates who are already convicted and serving time. Most of the escapees were in jail awaiting trial. No charges yet have been filed against the seventh captured escapee, 17-year-old carjacking suspect Ivan Arrendondo-Luna, whose case is being handled for now in the juvenile system. Meanwhile, authorities reported no developments in the search for escapees Gianni Alaimo, 26, and Luis Soto, 28, despite offers of a $3,000 reward for the capture of either man. The mass breakout, one of the country's worst in recent years, occurred Friday when nine maximum-security inmates including two murder suspects punched a hole in the ceiling of their fourth-floor housing unit and gained access to the roof via a vent. |
