A federal judge ordered pay raises for doctors and nurses who work in California's beleaguered prison system in a tersely worded 15-page rebuke this week of the governor's handling of inmate health care. U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson ruled that doctors should receive an immediate 10 percent pay hike to about $154,000 a year while prison nurses' would see their pay increase 18 percent to about $84,000 a year. The Schwarzenegger administration responded to the criticism by noting it had just appointed a physician last week to oversee a system which has been blamed for numerous inmate deaths. Henderson on Thursday gave Schwarzenegger one week to name a single person to be in charge of overseeing reforms to the health care system. He also criticized top Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials for failing to act quickly on reforms. |
