An Arkansas inmate died Sunday at Washington Regional Medical Center after hanging himself in the jail several days earlier. James Akin, 49, of Elkins attempted to hang himself with a string, possibly a shoelace, in a mop closet at the jail Thursday. He was discovered by jailers and taken to the hospital, where he died Sunday afternoon. Akin was convicted of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, and was in the jail awaiting transfer to a state regional punishment facility. He was booked into the jail Aug. 1 to begin serving an 18-month sentence. |
