Two Missouri correctional officers at the Pettis County Jail have been charged with assaulting an inmate. The charges of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, were filed Tuesday against Andrew Brown, 22, and James Harmon, 49, both of Sedalia. They have been suspended with pay during an investigation, Sheriff Kevin Bond said. The men are accused in a Nov. 26 incident involving Scott Kusgen, who was serving a year for attempting to steal anhydrous ammonia. The probable cause statement from Capt. David Keller of the sheriff's department said the two forced Kusgen's hands behind his back and struck him several times on the leg with their knees. Brown and Harmon characterized their actions as horseplay, while Kusgen said he didn't know if they were kidding or serious. |
