Minnesota lawmakers already threw the book at sex offenders earlier this year. Now the state's Sentencing Guidelines Commission is working out the details. The commission will vote next week on a plan to give longer prison terms for most sex crimes. First-degree rapists would face up to 30 years in prison, up from the current maximum sentence of 13 years and two months. Lawmakers approved a law in May punishing the most severe sex offenses with life in prison without possibility of parole. That law took effect in August. It also created a category of serious sex crimes punishable with life sentences with the possibility of release. For other sex crimes, the guidelines commission developed a grid of increased punishments. The group's purpose is to ensure that criminal penalties are appropriate and applied fairly. |
