Longer Terms for Sex Offenders
By Associated Press
Published: 12/12/2005

Minnesota lawmakers already threw the book at sex offenders earlier this year. Now the state's Sentencing Guidelines Commission is working out the details. The commission will vote next week on a plan to give longer prison terms for most sex crimes. First-degree rapists would face up to 30 years in prison, up from the current maximum sentence of 13 years and two months.
Lawmakers approved a law in May punishing the most severe sex offenses with life in prison without possibility of parole. That law took effect in August. It also created a category of serious sex crimes punishable with life sentences with the possibility of release.
For other sex crimes, the guidelines commission developed a grid of increased punishments. The group's purpose is to ensure that criminal penalties are appropriate and applied fairly.
