The family of a Georgia man who died after being stung with a Taser during a scuffle at the Gwinnett County Jail has filed a wrongful death suit. The suit filed last week is the second Taser-related lawsuit filed against Gwinnett County authorities in four months. The latest suit was filed in Gwinnett County State Court by attorneys representing the family of Frederick Williams. Williams lost consciousness and died after a May 2004 scuffle in the jail. The handcuffed and manacled inmate was shocked multiple times with a Taser. The lawsuit names Sheriff Butch Conway, four of his deputies and two Gwinnett County police officers. The suit also lists as defendants' weapon manufacturer Taser International and Prison Health Services, a company that provides medical services for the jail. Gwinnett County officials declined comment. The suit seeks unspecified monetary damages on behalf of Williams' widow and four young children. But the family's attorney, Keenan Nix, said at a news conference that he will be seeking a multi million dollar judgment. The suit alleges that Gwinnett law enforcement officials disregarded Williams' medical condition and used excessive force. In September, attorneys filed a Taser-related lawsuit on behalf of Gwinnett County inmate Ray Chares Austin. His attorneys blame the use of a Taser for his death on September 26th, 2003. The suit alleges Austin was shocked eight times. The sheriff's department says he was shocked "at least three times." |
