An Ohio juvenile prison officer accused of hitting a teenager was found innocent of an assault charge by a Delaware County Common Pleas Court jury. The jury deliberated for about 90 minutes night before acquitting Tommie Woods, 34, of Columbus. Before deliberations, Judge W. Duncan Whitney granted a defense motion to dismiss a charge of endangering a child. Woods has been on administrative leave from his job at the Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility in Delaware since the charges were filed against him in December 2004. Woods testified he used force only after the 16-year-old boy bit him on the wrist. The boy, now 18, testified he bit Woods when the officer tried to strangle him. "You've heard two different versions of the facts," Steven Mathless, Woods' attorney, told the panel in his closing statement. "You're going to have to judge this case on who's telling the truth." |
