Inmates at La Pica End Hunger Strike
By The Daily Journal
Published: 12/12/2005

Inmates at Venezuela's La Pica prison called off their hunger strike last week, after a deal was struck between inmate representatives and judges.
The strike was in its fifth day when judges promised to look into requests by inmates to fix trial dates, grant early release to inmates who have completed a part of their sentences and allow children to visit, according to reports. The judges in Monagas state promised to give a prompt response to their demands.
Hours before the strike ended, inmates threatened to turn their hunger strike into a blood bath. They promised carry through with their threat if their demands were not met.
The inmates have been surviving on water. The strike had spread to several other jails.
