More than 100 new Oregon jail beds will be open for business in Multnomah County, but they will come at a price. Commissioner Diane Linn visited with caseworkers with a county program intended to steer young people away from trouble. These youth mentoring-type programs are part of the answer to reducing crime. But commissioners have also reached agreement on another important part of keeping the community safe: jail beds. They voted to open 114 new beds at Inverness Jail east of Portland International Airport. The sheriff's office under Sheriff Bernie Giusto tends to work more jail staff extra hours instead of hiring more people, to keep headcount low and benefit costs under control. That has raised the concern of some commissioners that overtime amounts were too high. Linn says her executive budget being prepared for next year includes funding for more beds at Wapato Jail. She says the jail beds will be there if the social programs intended to keep people out of the justice system don't have the intended effect. The new jail beds will be open for the holiday season, and according to Linn, jail beds work hand-in-hand with other programs to help push down the number of people going through the criminal justice system. |
