Calif. prison inmate charged in serial killings

A California prison inmate accused of strangling five women to death in a 1990s serial killing spree has been charged with murder after he was linked to the crimes by DNA evidence, authorities said on Tuesday.
Police and prosecutors said they believe Ivan Hill -- who has been in a California state prison for robbery since 1994 -- committed the string of murders assigned by the press to an elusive serial killer called the "60 Freeway Slayer."
That nickname stemmed from the close proximity of most of the murders to the Pomona (60) Freeway, which runs east to west across Southern California. All of the victims were found strangled and some were also bound with rope.
A sixth woman was also murdered during that spree, which began in November of 1993. Hill was arrested in February of 1994. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
Prosecutors said no charges were filed in the sixth murder but that the investigation into it was continuing.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said Hill was linked to the murders through DNA evidence, adding that the case "dramatically illustrates how law enforcement agencies can reach back in time and bring criminals to justice through DNA technology and a more comprehensive felon DNA database."
