Two Brevard County Detention Center inmates attempted suicide in separate incidents Sunday night in what jail administrators call attention-getting actions. Commander Susan Jeter said she hated to even term the incidents suicide attempts, saying that both inmates were simply looking for attention. The "attempts" come two years after a rash of suicides at the jail prompted an internal affairs investigation and caused the county to explore alternatives to alleviate overcrowding at the facility. Inmate Nikee Turner placed a sheet loosely around his neck and was found leaning against a wall in his cell during regular inmate checks, according to jail records. He was never hanging. Turner was sent to the hospital and returned to the jail where he remains on suicide watch. He is receiving mental health counseling. Turner, 18, is in jail awaiting trial for the murder of Lonsey Dortly. He was arrested in July. The other inmate, 22-year-old John Walker, was already on suicide watch when he ripped out sutures on his arms and neck in what Jeter termed an act of self-mutilation. He also was sent to the hospital and returned. Walker, in jail on misdemeanor charges, remains on suicide watch. |
