A Texas inmate's death Tuesday at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center, “appears to have been from natural causes,” Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said. The 25-year-old Matamoros man's identification was not released at press time, pending notification of next of kin.

Justice of the Peace Linda Salazar ordered an autopsy performed at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen. Lucio said the autopsy would take place today. Emergency Medical Services transported the inmate to the Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville at 5:44 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 6:32 a.m., according to a report from the Sheriff's Department.

The report notes that several inmates in the Bravo 2 cell block said they woke up when they heard the inmate gasping for air and tried to help him.
