VA Prisoner Mistakenly Released

Virginia officials in Norfolk say that a man has been mistakenly released from the city's jail and is being sought by authorities. Phil Ramos, 35, had been transferred to the jail by Connecticut authorities, where he was serving a 15-year prison sentence. He was brought to Virginia to face charges from 1999.

He had appeared before the General District Court in Norfolk earlier this week where he pleaded guilty for failing to appear in court on a drug charge. He then received a six-month suspended sentence.

A spokesman for the city jail says that sometime after that, he was mistakenly released from the jail instead of being returned to Connecticut. Officials are under exactly when he was released, but say it was between Monday and today. Now, authorities have launched an investigation to find out how it happened.

According to the Connecticut Department of Correction, Ramos was sentenced in August to serve 15 years on a conspiracy charge.
