Three of California's Kern County detention officers accused of beating an inmate to death pleaded not guilty to murder on last week. Daniel Thomas Lindini, 48, Ralph Contreras, 32, and Roxanne Fowler, 41, are charged with second-degree murder and assault by a peace officer in the killing of James Moore, 30. Two other deputies, Angel Lopez Bravo, 34, and Lisa Diane Romero, 20, also pleaded not guilty last week to assault in connection to the killing. All five deputies were arrested earlier this month and accused of beating Moore on Aug. 15 while his hands and feet were shackled, said District Attorney Ed Jagels. Moore was beaten inside a jail parking garage after he was arrested for allegedly threatening the mother of his child, Jagels said. Moore died of head injuries, according to the coroner. All five suspects are free on bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 23. |
