The Austrialian union representing prison officers says security needs to be improved as a matter of urgency to prevent suicides and other deaths in custody. Last week, murderer Simon Schaer died in the Adelaide Remand Centre, after apparently jumping from an unguarded upper level. The 70-year-old was awaiting sentencing for fatally shooting his wife at a Rundle Mall department store last year. The chief industrial officer with the Public Service Association, Peter Christopher, says it is a safety issue that needs to be addressed even before any coronial inquiry goes ahead. "The PSA's concerned that if it's possible for a prisoner to climb over the rails and commit suicide that a potential risk exists that other people, either prisoners or prison officers could equally be thrown over," he said. "We believe the area now needs to be better fenced off, perhaps floor to ceiling." |
