Two of the five corrections deputies cleared last month of accusations they smuggled cocaine into the Palm Beach county jail filed separate lawsuits Wednesday against the informant they say concocted the allegations. The lawsuits mark the beginning of the expected legal fallout from a four-month drug inquiry into the deputies that Sheriff Ed Bieluch has acknowledged was built on lies. He said convicted felon Willoughby Farr made up tales of drug dealing inside the jail so he could get a reduced prison sentence. Cpl. Lawrence Femminella, his wife and Deputy Sharon Starling want Farr to pay for the repercussions of the investigation. They are seeking unspecified damages from Farr, who was sentenced last month to 71/2 years in prison for an array of criminal charges. Femminella and Starling, along with the other three deputies, were suspended for five weeks during the investigation. In addition, Farr implicated Femminella's wife, Gayle Femminella. The Palm Beach County Circuit Court lawsuits allege Farr "publicly disgraced" the Femminellas and Starling. Robert Saylor, the attorney for the Femminellas and Starling, said he expects more lawsuits against both the Sheriff's Office and the detectives who handled the inquiry. |
