According to the Associated Press, an Alaska prison designed for 200 inmates is regularly getting jammed with many more. Department of Corrections Commissioner Marc Antrim says jail crowding is a statewide issue but no urban facility is more crowded than the Fairbanks Correctional Center. The facility houses both short- and longterm prisoners. Last month, the jail broke a record for the number of inmates it held -- 311. With cells filled, 61 of the inmates were placed in the prison's gymnasium with cots to sleep on. Inmates say the smell can get bad. They have to wait to use bathrooms and arguments break out over whose turn it is to use the shower. Corrections officials say no expansion is planned. Antrim attributes the increase in inmates to tougher laws passed by the Legislature in recent years. Corrections facility superintendent Charles Stevenson says the inmate population exceeded 300 people seven times last month. |
