While in police custody in June, Pennsylvania resident Chad D. Myers managed to work one arm free from his handcuffs. He grabbed the gun of a Chester County constable, shot at him and missed, pistol-whipped the officer, carjacked a passing car and led police on a chase that finally ended when he crashed in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County. Last week in Chester County Court, Myers, 26, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, carjacking, escape from custody and theft of a firearm and was sentenced to 13 to 26 years in prison by Judge Ronald C. Nagle. ''I think the crimes indicate he poses a real threat to society,'' said Chester County First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Carmody. Myers is looking at the possibility of even more prison time. Last week, he was scheduled to be arraigned in Montgomery County Court. Myers will face 74 additional charges, including nine counts of robbery, nine counts of burglary, two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault and 10 counts of theft by unlawful taking. According to court records, Myers committed a series of burglaries and robberies in May and June, including several in Bucks and Montgomery counties. Phoenixville police alerted area departments to be on the lookout for Myers, a suspect in a string of Chester County crimes. On June 10, Richland police arrested Myers, who was living at the Patio Court Motel on Route 309, but not before he led them on a brief chase. Richland police turned Myers, who had previously lived in Phoenixville, over to Chester County authorities. ''From there the investigation took off and connected him to a lot of other crimes in the area and they folded them all into one case,'' Richland Police Chief Larry Cerami said. |
