When California vocational instructor Vicki Davis, had the idea of implementing a quilting program at the Taft Correctional Institution (TCI), she had no idea of how many hearts would be touched. In January 2005, approximately ten inmates were enrolled in the TCI Quilting Program. Soon, with the donation of scrap material from generous community members, this group began turning out beautiful quilts. Ms. Davis also began teaching crochet and the inmates immediately began making afghans. Department heads and executive staff were surprised and pleased with the quality of the workmanship and detail of the quilts and afghans. After being on display in the main lobby, the quilts and afghans were donated to those with significant need. To date, a number of blankets have been donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and the Bakersfield Rescue Mission. On December 1, TCI donated a number of quilts and afghans to the Taft Alfa House Women's Shelter. Kathy Johnson, Administrator of the Alfa House, could not have been happier to receive the donation. She added that they have been full all year and the need is great. The inmates participating in the program have enjoyed the satisfaction of contributing to charity. For many inmates, this is the first opportunity they have ever had to contribute their time and labor to serve those less fortunate. After only twelve months, program participation has more than doubled to 25 inmates |
