Students Buy Vests for COs

The work of Tennessee's Kingston Elementary School students could end up saving a life. Students presented four bullet proof vests to corrections officers who work at Brushy Mountain Prison last week.
Larry Harris was one of the recipients. On August 9, 2005 he and his partner, Wayne "Cotton" Morgan, were escorting prisoner George Hyatte outside of the Roane County Courthouse. Hyatte's wife, Jennifer, allegedly opened fire and killed Morgan. Neither of the officers were wearing bullet proof vests.
Harris says he is thankful for the support. " It just means more protection for us. More safety."
Students dug deep into their pockets and collected $700. They bought two top of the line bullet proof vests. The company that makes the vests heard about their effort and donated the other two.
Fourth grader, Quint Gasque, says he gave his left over lunch money to the fund. " That felt good. I don't think I ever saved someone before and now I have."
Morgan's son, Dennis, was there to show his appreciation.
He hopes his father's death is a lesson learned. "It sets a precedent for the rest of the communities around the state to look at how their safety officers are being protected."
Representatives from the department of corrections say that now all of Tennessee prison officers have their own bullet proof vests.
