Study: Religious Inmates Better Behaved
By United Press International
Published: 12/19/2005

A University of Alabama study finds that religious prison inmates are less likely to get into fights. Researchers discovered that prisoners who are practicing their faiths also tend not to get into arguments, which often escalate and get physical in prisons and jails. Criminologist Kent Kerley of the University of Alabama at Birmingham said that prisons should not drop General Educational Development programs, and other programs that have been shown to be effective, in order to hire more chaplains.
"But the results suggest that inmates should be given the options," he said. "Faith-based programs usually are inexpensive and are conducted by staff chaplains and local volunteers."
The study appeared in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.
