Officers Quell Disturbance

Detention officers in the Vanderburgh County Jail requested Evansville Police Department assistance Monday afternoon after a brief uprising of inmates in a cell. The situation was brought under control within 10 minutes and no one was injured, Sheriff Brad Ellsworth said.

Inmates in a third-floor cell were covering the window to with wet toilet paper, obstructing the view of officers and were using pieces of towels and sheets to prevent a cell door from rolling shut, Ellsworth said.  There were no fights or threats of violence. There were 17 inmates in the cell, which was built to house 16, he said.

City police officers were called in with dogs and non-lethal weapons such as Tasers and pepper spray. None of those items were used, however, because inmates followed commands to behave, Ellsworth said. No inmates were charged, but those involved in the incident had jail privileges taken away, Ellsworth said.
