Officers Assaulted

A New York inmate at Eastern Correctional Facility sent two correction officers to the hospital Saturday after he threw chairs through a visiting area waiting room, officials say.

According to the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, which represents law enforcement personnel at the prison, inmate Injah Tafari, 41, was attempting to have sex with a guest during Eastern's visiting hours.

Officials say when officers attempted to intervene, Tafari became violent, banging chairs against a visiting room window. Officers S. Furman and A. Colletti were injured when the glass broke; both were treated at a local hospital and released.

Kevin Walker, mid-Hudson vice president of the correctional officers association, said Tafari, who is serving time for robbery, will face one count of third-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and two counts of second degree assault, also a felony.
