One Massachusetts inmate committed suicide, and another three attempted suicide this week, all in the segregation unit of the maximum security prison MCI-Cedar Junction, according to officials. Nelson Rodriguez, 26, who was serving a four-year sentence for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, was found hanging in a cell on Tuesday afternoon and was pronounced dead soon after, said Diane Wiffin, DOC spokeswoman. Another inmate in the same segregation unit attempted to hang himself, and two others attempted to slice themselves. All three of those suicide attempts were unsuccessful, Wiffin said. It was unclear how the inmates were able to obtain the implements used in the suicide bids. One inmate is being housed in the Health Services Unit at MCI-Cedar Junction, while two inmates were transferred to outside hospitals for treatment. |
