The Montana State Prison is under emergency lockdown after correctional officers found a "significant building security breach" while performing a random search, officials said last week. The lockdown, which began around noon, will remain in effect until the facility is secure, Warden Mike Mahoney said. No further details were released. Also last week, an inmate was hospitalized after trying to hang himself in a detention cell, prison spokeswoman Linda Moodry said. His name was not released, and the suicide attempt was not related to the lockdown. "He's fine and in stable condition" at a Deer Lodge hospital, Moodry said of the inmate. Four Montana State Prison inmates died by suicide during a six-month period in 2003-04. The prison in May 2004 instituted a plan aimed at reducing the potential for suicide among inmates. Records indicate the most recent suicide at the prison took place on Feb. 28 of this year. |
