Inmates Sew up Mouths
By RIA Novosti
Published: 12/26/2005

Three inmates in a detention center in western Georgia (near Russia) have dramatically sewn up their mouths and are refusing to accept food or water in a protest against their protracted legal proceedings, a rights organization said last week.
A representative of the organization, Narodny Zashchitnik (the People's Defense), also met with the inmates, who began their protest Saturday.
He asked the courts to accelerate the hearings into the three defendants' case, but was told that the judicial system was so overloaded that it was virtually impossible to hear cases on time.
