A veteran officer at the Middle Tennessee Correctional Complex in Nashville has died of an apparent beating at the prison.
Officials said 59-year-old Fred Hyatt of Clarksville was found lying on the floor late Saturday night at one of the housing units. He had been beaten in the head and died a short time later at the hospital.
Prison officials said they are investigating whether the attack might have been part of an escape plot. Five inmates have been placed in segregation during the investigation. Hyatt had been a prison officer for 18 years.
His wife, Won Hyatt, told reporters her husband was hit with a can of food and then with a flashlight.
The officer did not press his panic button. He was unarmed.
It was the first time a prison officer has been slain at this facility.
