A 28-year-old New York inmate committed suicide on Wednesday by tying a plastic bag over his head with socks, police said.

Jason David Kutey, of Latham, was discovered under a blanket in his bed by a correction officer. The officer found Kutey with a plastic garbage bag over his head, fastened with socks, said Sheriff James L. Campbell.

An autopsy was scheduled for late yesterday. Kutey was sentenced last week in Albany County Court to 16 years in state prison for kidnapping and burglary and was awaiting transfer to a state facility.

In May, Kutey had kidnapped his former girlfriend and later held her and her new boyfriend hostage in an armed standoff with police.
