A murder suspect in the death in 2002 of Stephanie Renee Bennett, a native of Virginia, committed suicide yesterday in North Carolina's most secure prison, his attorney and authorities said. Drew Planten, 35, committed suicide about 2 p.m. at Raleigh's Central Prison, the state's only maximum-security prison, said Kirk Osborn, his appointed attorney. Correction Department spokesman Keith Acree said that a prison officer found Planten unresponsive in his single-person cell at 2 p.m. on Monday, and that efforts to revive him in the prison's emergency room were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m. Acree said that State Bureau of Investigation agents were investigating Planten's death, but it did not immediately appear that anyone else was involved. Planten was accused of raping and strangling Bennett, 23, in her Raleigh apartment in 2002. Police said they arrested Planten on Oct. 19 after a DNA sample that they collected from his job at the N.C. Agriculture Department and Con-sumer Affairs matched semen found at the crime scene. |
