An Alabama man sentenced to 40 years at Donaldson Correctional Facility was killed in a fight at the Bessemer prison Sunday, according to a state Department of Corrections spokesman. Arthur Lee Scruggs, 38, was sentenced in 1990 to two consecutive 20-year terms for first-degree robbery and a concurrent 15-year sentence for first-degree escape. Correctional officers discovered his death inside another inmate's cell at about 11 a.m., said Public Information Manager Brian Corbett. “I wouldn't say it's a murder, but it's being treated as a homicide, and there are two suspects in custody that are being interviewed,” Corbett said. Authorities suspect inmates Michael Barnes and Gerald Henderson in the death, Corbett said. Both are serving life without parole for murder. The killing took place in a cell belonging to one of the suspects, Corbett said. Corbett said the death is still under investigation by DOC. |
