A part-time Wilkes County jailer has been fired after North Carolina sheriff's officials say he burned two inmates with a flashlight. Detention Officer Brian Wayne Mc-Guire, 30, of Elkin was dismissed from duty and later charged with injury to a prisoner by a jailer. He was released on a written promise to appear in court. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues. An inmate, Tony Oliver, 36, filed a grievance last week, saying that McGuire had injured him. Authorities said the investigation found that McGuire had burned Oliver and another inmate with a flashlight. A staff doctor treated both inmates. Sheriff's officials gave this account of what happened: Sometime between Dec. 18 and 20, 2005, McGuire was using a krypton-bulb flashlight to check the cell-block area. People started talking about how hot the light was. McGuire told them that he would give them a cigarette if they could hold the light against their skin for five minutes. Several inmates touched the light and said that it was too hot, but Oliver stuck his arm through the bars and said that the light wasn't big enough to hurt him. McGuire placed the light on Oliver's arm for about three to five minutes, causing a blister. During the investigation, authorities learned that inmate Boyd Arthur Cleary, 27, of Trap-hill had also been burned with a flashlight by McGuire. Last week, Cleary walked up to the bars of his cell and placed his upper chest against the flash-light. McGuire held the light there for about three minutes before Cleary backed away. Both inmates are expected to receive follow-up treatment. |
