An Indiana State Prison inmate died Wednesday morning after choking himself with a sheet, the second suicide at the prison this week. Stephen A. Johnson, 49, was found trying to choke himself while in his bed, the Indiana Department of Correction said. Prison staff and LaPorte County emergency workers were unable to revive him. Johnson was convicted of murder in Delaware County in June 1994. He was sentenced to 60 years for the murder of a 26-year-old Muncie resident in 1986 and 10 years for burglary. He had been scheduled to be released Feb. 23, 2024. The death occurred a day after officers found Charles E. Roche Jr., 42, of Hammond, dead during a security check Tuesday. He used a sheet braided into a rope to hang himself. The convicted murderer who was denied his wish to be executed left a suicide note in which he wrote of the pain of watching others on death row agonize over their fates. |
