At least 23 inmates and two staff members at San Quentin State Prison were injured during a prison riot in a crowded dining hall, prison officials said Friday. Officers armed with pepper spray and batons were able to quell the riot quickly after it started around 7 p.m. Thursday. About 260 inmates were in the dining hall, said prison spokesman Sgt. Eric Messick. Inmates identified as being involved in the riot were removed from the general population as authorities continued to investigate what caused the fight, Messick said. One staff member was punched several times, and another had a sprained knee. Both were treated and released, Messick said. One inmate was treated for a broken jaw at an outside hospital before returning to the prison. The prison's Badger Section housing block, a reception unit for new inmates where the riot took place remained locked down Friday and the unit's 456 inmates were confined to their cells, Messick said. Nine plastic weapons used for stabbing and slashing were found at the scene, including toothbrushes filed to a point or with razors melted into their heads, Messick said. |
