| Australian Suspects on Hunger Strike |

Ten men, being held in an Australian maximum-security prison in Victoria on terrorism charges, are on a hunger strike. Their lawyer, Rob Stary, says the men started the strike last week because they are not allowed to pray together. The men have been charged with being members of a terrorist organization. Stary says other prisoners are allowed to meet to pray. A spokesman for the Victorian Corrections Commissioner says the men have been separated for security reasons. He says authorities have done everything they can to make sure the men's religious needs are met and will not be swayed by a hunger strike. Stary says the men are prepared to carry out their hunger strike indefinitely. "I'm concerned about their well-being, physically and mentally," he said. “They're un-convicted prisoners and yet they're in the state's maximum-security unit. |
