Lawyers for North Carolina death row inmate Pierre Dyon Simpson have appealed for clemency from Governor Mike Easley. Simpson is scheduled to die later this month for the 1984 murder of a 92-year-old retired minister. The defense argues that Simpson has brain damage and had a chaotic foster care childhood. It has asked that the death sentence be overturned. The victim's grandson says the Reverend Jean Darter was a compassionate man, but "believed in personal responsibility" and punishment. Darter was tied to his bed and beaten to death the day after he gave food to Simpson and his girlfriend. She's serving life in prison. |
