Mississippi's Pike County Sheriff's Department has dismissed three employees after receiving reports that a male inmate was abused. Jail administrator Willie Patterson, assistant jail administrator Eugene Bates and corrections officer Joey Gunther were fired last week, Sheriff Mark Shepherd said. Authorities will not release details of the incident until the investigation is complete. Officials declined to name the inmate, who was allegedly abused last week and briefly hospitalized at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Shepherd said the inmate remained in custody, but he would not disclose where he was being held. Shepherd began an internal affairs investigation after he learned of the incident on Saturday morning. The findings of that investigation led Shepherd to contact the Mississippi Highway Patrol's Criminal Investigation Bureau and the local district attorney's office. Shepherd said he was ashamed by the way the prisoner had been treated. "I'm not going to tolerate anything here that is ... less than professional," he said. The episode comes after a group of five inmates escaped from the jail last fall. They were recaptured, but the incident publicized the jail's inadequacies. When asked if Friday's incident was connected to deficiencies at the jail, Shepherd said, "It's possible." |
