An Iowa panel of prison experts studying the future of the State Penitentiary is recommending three options for the 19th century prison: tear it down, repair it, or leave it alone. The group, comprised of four members of the state's Board of Corrections, says it didn't have enough time to determine a firm recommendation. Governor Vilsack gave it one month to study the prison's future after two inmates escaped the Fort Madison facility in November. Vilsack had hoped to get a recommendation in time for lawmakers to consider it this session. The panel did not indicate a preferred option, but members say they will continue to review the prison system and may issue a recommendation later. Corrections officials say repairs at the prison could cost between two and 30 million dollars, depending on what repairs are needed. The cost of replacing the prison has been estimated at 80 to 100 million dollars. |
