Former Inmates File Suit Against Sheriff
By Associated Press
Published: 11/10/2003

Two people who have recently been inmates in the Carter County, Tenn. Jail have filed a civil rights lawsuit against the county and Sheriff John Henson.
The lawsuit is also on behalf of a class of more than one-thousand others who've been in the lockup.
Michael Todd Davis and Donna Wells' lawsuit asks a federal judge in Greeneville to issue a court order, forcing the defendants to eliminate overcrowding and improve jail conditions.
The suit claims the jail is "dangerously overcrowded," inmates are exposed to raw sewage and inch-thick mold and security is so lax that drug use is commonplace.
The plaintiffs also contend medical care is grossly inadequate, food service is unsanitary and there are no opportunities for recreation or religious observances.
Carter County Mayor Dale Fair withheld immediate comment, saying he wanted to review the lawsuit with the county attorney.
