Police in Alabama and Georgia searched Monday for two murder suspects who overpowered officers and fled from an overcrowded Alabama jail on the state line on Saturday. Authorities used tracking dogs in the hunt for Johnny Earl Jones, 17, who was charged in the murder of a child he was baby-sitting, and Lamar Elan Benton, 19, charged in the murder and rape of a woman. A third murder suspect, 33-year-old Brent Edward Martin, got out with Jones and Benton early Saturday but was quickly recaptured by officers using tracking dogs and helicopters. The Russell County Jail, like many in Alabama, is operating beyond its designed capacity of 220. It held about 300 inmates when the escape occurred, Boswell said. After attacking the two officers, the three went to the front of the jail, where they knocked down another officer, took her keys and escaped, Boswell said. |
